SoLa Impact recently began a new pilot building project in our ground-up affordable housing portfolio in South LA. Panelization, the construction of building sections in remote locations and transported to building sites for construction, allows Sola Impact to build on sites typically untenable for traditional construction operations. Taking on panelization has served as the “proof of concept” that modular construction can work for our projects, accelerating construction while cutting cost. By purchasing materials well ahead of construction, we were able to avoid major price escalations in lumber and other raw materials brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. We will learn all we can from panelization in preparation for fully volumetric modular projects going into production in 2021.
“To achieve the scalability in construction methodologies that our pipeline demands, we at SoLa have had to look outside the box for solutions. We believe that by merging manufacturing with construction we can succeed in driving down construction costs without compromising on either our schedule or the quality of the work. In the near future, we will be pushing this concept even further and deliver the most innovative projects in California.”
